Mark Mason developed his love of ceramics alongside studying for a Bachelor of Education degree in Ballarat. While at teachers’ college in 1978, Mark took a potteryelective and his passion for clay and wheel-thrown work began.

During his teaching career he continued his study in Ceramic Design and in 1989 he gained an Associate Diploma in Ceramic Design at Frankston Chisholm. Through the tutelage of Michael Chanter and Rick Price, Mark developed skills in throwing larger ceramic forms and the Raku firing process.

His skill and understanding of Ceramic Design continued to develop and in 2000, Mark gained a degree in Applied Arts majoring in Ceramic Design from Monash University.

During this period of study, he continued to develop his skills in the Raku firing process concentrating on the difficult to control, dry copper matte glaze.

Over the years Mark has explored many facets of pottery making. He is drawn to the beauty of large textural ceramic forms enhanced with a range of decorative techniques. Mark has attended a number of conferences in ceramics to enhance his knowledge and expertise.

In 1995, his work was featured at the Bulle Gallery in Flinders Street Melbourne. In 2019, Mark exhibited his work at the Hawthorn Gallery which featured a series of raku ceramic forms. He sells his work at a number of galleries and shops throughout Victoria. After more than 40 years he still enjoys creating with clay.
